Editorial Meeting Recap: Literary Magazines; Video Series; Vendor Tables

Today’s Editorial Meeting for Tin Shingle Members has ended, and was very productive for all involved. On these intimate, small-group experiences, members of Tin Shingle are able to come into a private Zoom meeting to align their content planning, marketing efforts, media pitches, etc.

If one person comes, it’s an open floor for them. If two or more people come, Katie moderates sharing and feedback opportunities for all.

Today, Kimberly Sevilla, attended. She is the owner of Shelter Air, the independent and woman owned HVAC company in the Hudson Valley. Kimberly is a very creative person, in addition to her science background, and has been blossoming as an essayist. Therefore, today, several outreach strategies were covered.

In this photo, Kimberly is looking at Katie's new attic, where everything has been moved out of it and it's being used as a studio place of relaxation. Kimberly shared ideas of how to secure grant financing for a mini-split and insulation through an income-based program in New York State. 

Today we discussed:

- 📖 Pitching: Where to pitch her essays - which literary magazines. At Tin Shingle, look for a new category for Literary Magazines as we research those results. Fellow essayist and graphic novel artist Parisa Karami was just a text away to begin dropping resources.

- 👯‍♀️Marketing: Where to vendor table in Beacon, NY. Kimberly is all about personal connection.

- 🎥 Video: Shelter Air is a member sponsor of Tin Shingle's hyper local sister publication, A Little Beacon Blog. We discussed possible new video series for service-based Business Directory advertisers called "What’s Trending," where Katie interviews the business owner on what’s been trending in their clients, customers and industry for quick 3 minute videos.

$10,000 Grant Available From BeyGOOD and Cécred For Salon and Barbershop Owners

The deadline is today, Friday 13th, but Beyoncé opened a grant opportunity through her foundation BeyGOOD and her hair care line Cécred for 37 hair stylists and barbershops to be awarded $10,000 grants if they can demonstrate hardship.

This is their second round of awards, which has expanded to be nation-wide and focuses on both entrepreneurs with business capital, and students with scholarships to honor the vital role salons play in communities.

“Hairstylists have an immense impact on the people in their chairs,” states their website. “They create a sacred space where we can show up how we want and express ourselves through our hair. We’re honored to give back to this amazing community.“

The grant extends beyond money and is “designed to provide access to critical business development tools, mentorship and resources provided by The National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC),” they say.

Those who are not awarded also have a chance at being included. “The top 40% of non-selected finalists will receive extended support including group coaching and Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) certification resources.”

Eligibility Requirements:

• Minimum of 2 years of experience as a licensed barber, hairstylist, or cosmetologist

• Demonstrated financial hardship

• Proof of salon or barbershop business ownership or a lease agreement for a salon, suite, booth, or chair

• In business for at least 1 year
